Table of contents [Show]
Current Status
Makalu expeditions in Nepal are active but remain in an early phase compared to Annapurna and Everest.
Teams have reached Base Camp and begun initial preparations. Activity on the mountain is still limited, with most climbers focusing on logistics and gradual acclimatization.

Route Progress
Route development on Makalu has started but is not yet advanced:
- Approach to Base Camp completed by all teams
- Initial route scouting above Base Camp underway
- No confirmed fixed ropes on higher sections
The standard route via the northwest ridge requires significant preparation, which is still in progress.
Acclimatization Activity
Acclimatization is at an early stage:
- Short carries above Base Camp have begun
- No full rotations to higher camps reported
- Teams are moving cautiously due to conditions
Most climbers are still establishing rhythm rather than pushing altitude.
Weather and Conditions
Makalu is currently experiencing typical early-season instability:
- Intermittent snowfall
- Cold temperatures with strong winds at higher elevations
- Variable visibility affecting route work

Conditions are not severe enough to stop operations completely, but they are slowing progress.
